Esri has created a series of interactive maps to visualize the changes in US population and state apportionment following the release of 2020 Census Apportionment Results earlier this week. The maps contrast anemic population growth in the Northeast and the Midwest with rapid gains in many Western and Southern states, and show how the balance of power among states has shifted as a result. Together, these maps tell a clear story about how and where the US population is changing and growing.
2020 Population Change and Seats Gained/Lost highlights the states that lost representatives in orange (California, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York) and those that gained representatives in green (Texas, Oregon, Montana, Colorado, Florida, and North Carolina). The size of each circle represents the change in actual population from 2010 to 2020.
Change in Resident Population Compared to National Change, 2010 to 2020 visualizes which states are growing faster or slower than the national growth rate of 7.4% between 2010 and 2020. States with purple circles indicate population growth below the national average while those with green circles experienced growth above the national average. States with a beige color were near the national average of 7.4%. The size of each circle represents the total 2020 population in each state.
