LiDAR (also written LIDAR, LiDAR or LADAR) is a remote sensing technology that measures distance by illuminating a target with a laser and analyzing the reflected light. Although thought by some to be an acronym of Light Detection And Ranging, the term lidar was actually created as a portmanteau of “light” and “radar”.
LiDAR and Laser Scanning are often used synonymously sometimes.
The usage of LiDAR is done through the sensors mounted on aerial platforms for aerial mapping, vehicles, and on the ground for terrestrial mapping. The usage of LiDAR is also heavily seen in autonomous vehicles or self-driving cars for real-time mapping, for the vehicle to navigate.
