5 trends influencing growth prospects of mobile satellite services market

3 Minutes Read

The global mobile satellite services market is set to record phenomenal impetus in the upcoming years, primarily due to the rising demand for mobility and developments in digital technologies. Not to mention, advancements in satellite technologies in conjugation with introduction of high accuracy GPS systems, GNSS receivers, and sensors is anticipated to offer a considerable boost to the global MSS market expansion.

Mobile satellite services is a network that provides two-way data as well as voice communication to users located in any remote location across the globe. Speaking of which, satellite communication satellites have seized a significant share of daily lives, while emerging as an integral part of telecommunication networks, owing to their ability to deliver a wide network coverage, uniform performance, and increased usability in disaster response systems irrespective of the location.

As per Global Market Insights, Inc., mobile satellite services market is poised to register tremendous gains over the forthcoming years in light of the below mentioned trends:

Use of mobile satellite services in disaster and emergency situations

Natural disasters have been infamous for claiming almost more than 60,000 deaths per year worldwide. In fact, disasters were responsible for nearly 0.1 per cent of deaths over the past decade, calling out for a solution which could save umpteen lives during such situations while alerting people altogether.

In this regard, rapid adoption of mobile satellite and cellular services has offered a push to the overall growth of mobile satellite services market. Since deployment of wireless forms as a foremost step in emergency response, satellite communication systems are the only communication network that are impenetrable to damage from disasters. On top of that, mobile satellite services are also being used across various economies to provide seismic data to government agencies to prompt early warnings prior to the occurrence of disasters.

Increased adoption of mobile satellite services in marine and defense sector

Significant use of mobile satellite services can be seen across the marine and defense sector. Reports suggest that these sectors have been observing a huge demand and adoption of MSS owing to the introduction of many cellular and satellite service systems.

Recently, a telecommunications company- COMSAT had in 2018 announced teaming up with Iridium to offer secure global communications for military and government uses. Under the pact, COMSAT was stated to leverage the benefits of Iridium network, including services that cater to communications security requirements, and on-the-move connectivity for the United States Department of Defense. Such initiatives have bolstered the business space of MSS market across electronics and medica fraternity.

Enhanced technological developments across North America

Considering the regional demographics of mobile satellite services market, it is pivotal to note that North America is touted to lead the overall industry in the near future, perhaps due to the presence of advanced technological infrastructure and enhanced network connectivity. Moreover, various governmental agencies have also begun undertaking significant efforts to bring forth new navigation and satellite systems, thereby triggering the growth of satcom industry across the region.

In one such instance, the U.S Air Force had in mid-2018 announced funding USD 130 million to SpaceX to support the launch of Air Force Space Command Satellite-52 satellites in 2020.

Digital revolution in the economies of Asia Pacific

It is noteworthy to mention that Asia Pacific is also likely to depict massive gains across the MSS industry on the grounds of developments in digital infrastructure and increased efforts being taken by the regional government towards implementation of 5G technology. Also, proliferation of smartphones and IoT platforms will escalate the demand for space-based communication systems across the emerging economies of Asia Pacific.

Strategic developments by leading industry players

The global mobile satellite services industry is highly consolidated and boasts of the presence of prominent industry leaders including Singtel, Globalstar, Iridium Communications, Telstra, ORBCOMM, INTELSAT, EchoStar, and Inmarsat plc, amongst others. These well-known players have been relentlessly working towards development of novel solutions, adding to the expanding business space, while bring involved in mergers, acquisitions, partnerships, and product differentiations.

One such company, EchoStar Mobile, had in 2019 declared partnering with RigNet Inc., to commercialize and distribute EchoStar Mobile IP-based MSS for data and voice to RigNet’s European customer base. As per news reports, the latter company would distribute equipment and provider reliable, secure, and cost-effective connectivity services to nearly 28 European member states.
