Has the the height of Mount Everest shrunk?
According to India’s surveyor-general, a school of thought has grown that Earth’s highest peak has shrunk.
The culprit of the possible shrinking is thought to be the gigantic earthquake that devastated Nepal in April 2015. Mount everest was first measured in 1855 by Survey of India..under the leadership of sir george everest and the peak was later named after him.
They found that Everest rose to 29,028 feet above sea level. In 1956, it was re-measured by India and the height remained the same.
Over time, measuring technology has significantly improved,
leaving room for discrepancies. This time around, scientists will measure Everest’s height using GPS equipment and triangulation techniques. No other peak in the world lies above 29,000 feet. The decision to remeasure Mount Everest has become a matter of interest for surveyors and geographers all over the world.
