US: Yahoo! Local – the site’s Hyper-Local, multi-content offering – is now available in beta form at . It uses geo-informatics and content enrichment platforms, including Where On Earth (WOE) and Placemaker, to identify and geo-tag news stories down to the neighbourhood level.
Yahoo! Local integrates Yahoo’s recently launched Local Offers programme, which aggregates deals and offers from partners such as Groupon, LivingSocial, Gilt City, BloomSpot and more.
Essentially the product puts all kinds of local content, from local news, deals and events, in one site for users. It is also available on the iPhone and Android. Yahoo is also working on ad offerings to accompany this product.
This product rolls out as Google is still licking its wounds over its apparent rejection by Groupon of its USD6 billion offer. While neither company officially acknowledged the rumours, it has been widely believed that Google was angling for the company in order to boost its local ad bona bides.
