Western Resources, Inc., headquartered in Topeka, Kansas, has successfully implemented its enterprise geographic information system (GIS) solution based on Miner & Miner’s ArcFM and Designer and ESRI’s ArcGIS products. Western Resources is a consumer services company, which owns Kansas Power & Light (KPL) and Kansas Gas & Electric (KGE) utilities. KPL serves approximately 326,000 customers, and KGE serves nearly 294,000 customers. The utilities operate more than 6,300 miles of transmission lines and about 21,500 miles of electric distribution lines throughout Kansas. This project involved teams from Miner & Miner, ESRI, and Western Resources. Western Resources was responsible for its data conversion from Cablecad and also worked on some of the customisations. Miner & Miner and ESRI provided software and implementation services. Several interfaces were developed to Western Resources’ mainframe DB2 databases including links to its customer information system and outage management system. The Designer application also supports an interface to Severn Trent’s work management system. Primary benefits of the technology include the ability to provide better storm restoration services. The capability to visualize outage areas improves coordination within the dispatching office to oversee restoration. Another benefit is the manpower savings in property taxes on assets.
