Virgin partners with Google to map ocean floor

US: Richard Branson, Founder and Chairman of Virgin Group Ltd, announced that Virgin is partnering with Google for Virgin Oceanic project. The project is expected to see the mogul pilot (Branson) a special ‘flying’ solo submarine to the deepest part of each of the planet’s five oceans — including the bottom of the Mariana Trench, 36,201ft down, a depth no human has yet reached.

Under this partnership, Google will stream Virgin’s dives on Google Maps. Images and video from the voyages will be added to Google Earth’s interactive map of the world. 12 members team of scientists and explorers which include Branson, aims to “collate data and catalogue life forms that will never have been seen before by human eyes and are unknown to science.” Through this way, Branson also hopes to improve human’s collective knowledge of the ocean floor.
