Vietnam: The Ho Chi Minh City National University is working together with the southwest provinces of Dong Thap, Soc Trang, Can Tho and Long An to implement the Mekong Delta Geographic Information System (MDGIS) which will integrate disparate spatial databases into a unified platform.

The Mekong Delta region encompasses a large portion of southwestern Vietnam and has been dubbed as a biological treasure trove by the international community. As such, local governments in the region are now streamlining their efforts to sustain Mekong Delta’s rich biodiversity.

“Over the recent years, a number of localities in the Mekong Delta have started applying GIS. However they are discrete and do not connect with a unified system to better serve the leadership and management of socio-economic development of the localities as well as the whole region," said Professor Nguyen Van Hieu, head of the project drafting board.

By having the MDGIS in place, the local governments in the region can have access to updated information on the status of natural resources and that would allow them to study and measure the socio-economic impact of climate change and natural disasters.
