Verizon’s IoT push for utilities

US: Verizon communications wants to ease utility companies into the Internet of Things, or IoT, by delivering smart energy as a service. The company has announced an IoT platform service called Grid Wide Utility Solutions. The service will provide utility companies an integrated solution for smart metering, demand response, meter data management and distribution monitoring and control. Verizon’s Grid Wide comes with a wide-range of 4G LTE-enabled, cloud-based apps. It will not only read smart meters remotely, but also use them as a power-quality sensor. This would help utilities understand the quality of the electricity they are delivering to their customers. The service is primarily aimed at smaller investor-owned utilities and electric cooperatives that don’t want to invest in their own metering hardware and IT infrastructure.
