VDOF implements ESRI ArcGIS Server to manage forestlands

California, USA, 30 May 2006: ESRI has announced that the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) has implemented its GIS software- ArcGIS Server, for its program called the Integrated Forest Resource Information System (IFRIS) to manage forestlands.

IFRIS will enable field staff to make better assessments of how landowners should manage their resources with respect to short- and long-term goals. The mapped data will also permit regional and statewide spatial analyses relative to other spatial units such as watersheds, stewardship priority areas, economic impact zones, and others.

“This application will make it easier for field staff to capture data describing the location and nature of wildfire incidents, water quality, harvest inspections, forest health observations, and other critical data,” says Mindia Brown, Information Systems Manager, VDOF.

IFRIS is in its first phase of development. Future IFRIS development will incorporate field-based mapping and data collection using personal data assistants with integrated GPS.
