US: USGS has awarded about 4 million dollars to four universities to get an earthquake early warning system into the production stage. Called ShakeAlert, the functioning system will be able to give people a precious few seconds to stop what they are doing, and take precautions before an earthquake strikes. The grant has been awarded to California Institute of Technology; University of California, Berkeley; University of Washington and University of Oregon. The USGS, along with the universities, will continue developing algorithms to detect potentially damaging earthquakes. Moreover, they will upgrade and construct around 150 seismic sensors to improve the speed and reliability of the warnings.
