US: The National Alliance for Public Safety GIS (NAPSG) Foundation has appointed United Services Automobile Association (USAA) executive Manuel Rios to the board of directors. Rios is senior vice president of underwriting for USAA Property & Casualty. Rios said, “Geographic information systems can help these organisations capture, manage, analyse and view geographical images and data that can greatly inform their preparation and response. We’re committed to helping the NAPSG Foundation shape and advance the broad-scale use of GIS on the local, regional and national level to enhance the quality of life in communities across the country.”
Further, Rios added that coordination among safety organisations and emergency responders before, during and after a crisis is critical to reducing risk and ensuring life safety and the protection of property.
“Rios’ appointment to the board is an important step in the foundation’s efforts to engage non-traditional public safety industries with significant interest in solving the United States’ greatest emergency preparedness challenges,” said the foundation’s chairman Keith Richter.
“The insurance industry plays an instrumental role in helping to secure citizens, property and critical infrastructure that emergency responders protect on a daily basis. Rios brings valuable insurance and data gathering expertise and experience through USAA’s innovative work with disaster mitigation sectors,” continued Richter.
USAA uses geographic information systems, in part, to assess risks its customers face and empower them to make wise decisions about where they live and how to protect themselves and their property. It is also active with the Institute for Business and Home Safety, the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes and International Association of Fire Chiefs in the development of programs that help prevent catastrophic loss.
