Undersea drone bares ocean secrets

US: Wave Glider, an ocean drone developed by Liquid Robotics, collected rare, real-time undersea information when typhoon Rammasun hit the South China Sea.

Caught squarely in the typhoon’s path, the drone was remotely piloted to collect and transmit real time wave, conductivity, temperature and current data from the surface of the ocean. It gathered current data to 100 metres and full directional wave spectrum data giving researchers an exclusive picture of the dreadful surface conditions during a deadly typhoon condition.

Before the invention of the Wave Glider no vehicle could sail through and survive hurricane/typhoon class storms to gather surface data without extreme risk to human life.
