UN committee calls for platform for space-based information for disaster management

Vienna, Austria, 19 June 2006: During its 49th session, held from 7 to 16 June, the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) agreed that a platform for space-based information for disaster management and emergency response should be implemented as a programme of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (OOSA). The Committee also agreed that the partners implementing the platform should aim to begin activities in January 2007.

The Committee endorsed the activities of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications for the second half of 2006 and for 2007. It also reviewed the activities of the International Satellite System for Search and Rescue (Cospas-Sarsat).
