UAE Armed Forces to buy satellite to track national development

The UAE Armed Forces will buy its own satellite within a couple of years to track the country’s development, an official said.

Major Ali Al Shehhi, ground station manager at the Space Reconnaissance Centre, which comes under the UAE Armed Forces, said the country currently uses a commercial satellite that does not belong to the UAE.

The announcement was made during the recently held 2004 Middle East and Africa Conference for ESRI Users at the Al Bustan Rotana Hotel in Dubai.

According to Major Al Shehhi, many parties benefit from their services, including the planning department.

The new satellite would be used for development purposes only and not for political purposes, he said.
