U.S., Russia to discuss satellite navigation system cooperation

The United States and the Russian Federation intend to begin preliminary discussions on an agreement for cooperation between the U.S. GPS and the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS). Both countries intend to work together “to the maximum extent practicable to maintain compatibility and promote interoperability of GPS and GLONASS for civil user benefits worldwide,” according to a joint statement issued December 14 by the U.S. State Department.

U.S. and Russian delegations met in Washington, D.C., December 9-10 to discuss cooperation between the two satellite navigation systems.
