Turkey develops GIS-based information system

Turkey: The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) has developed an information system that will be used in defense as part of important steps it is taking to create a situation in which Turkey can rely more on domestic production of defense equipment than foreign sources.

TUBİTAK has dedicated itself to expanding the Turkish national defense industry in recent years and has now developed its own GIS that will enable Turkish engineers to develop important technology for domestically produced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), helicopters and airplanes.

The GIS can capture, store, manipulate, analyse, manage and present all types of geographical data. There are few countries in the world that possess domestically produced GIS software. Among them are the US, Israel, South Korea and Canada. The development of Turkey”s GIS by the Institute of Information Technology at the TÜBİTAK Research Center for Advanced Technologies on Informatics and Information Security (BİLGEM) has also created domestic opportunities for Turkish engineers.
