The Delhi State Food and Civil Supplies Corporation has finally decided to do something about the pilferage and diversion of food commodities that has dented its image. According to an estimate by the Corporation, 30 per cent to 35 per cent of the material taken from FCI godowns by the transporters never reaches the ration shops.
Under a new Chairperson, Nita Bali, the Corporation has decided to do online policing — using the web-based GPS, it will track its trucks, all the way from the godowns of the Food Corporation of India to the fair price shops. A private service provider will do the tracking and will be paid by the Corporation.
The proposal, made on the advice of the Lieutenant-Governor, is now waiting for his formal approval. The Corporation is planning to seek the help of the MCD in the matter.
