VARGIS was awarded a contract in January 2002 by the Virginia Geographic Information Network to produce a multi-resolution imagery basemap for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Natural colour aerial imagery has now been captured for the entire state of Virginia: over 27,000 frames were acquired at 3 scales in 6 weeks time. This is a landmark event, representing the most frames ever captured for a single project area in a single flying season. These images will be used to create digital orthoimagery for approximately 48,000 square miles, with delivery required within one year.
The aerial acquisition for the project was managed by EarthData Aviation of Hagerstown, MD which led a team of aerial firms including Air Survey Corporation, Sterling, VA; Air Photographics, Inc., Martinsburg, WV; Richard Crouse and Associates, Inc., Frederick, MD; Tuck Engineering, Inc., Big Stone Gap, VA; and Horizons, Inc., Rapid City, SD. All film processing is being performed by HAS, Dayton, OH. AGFA film from a single production batch was used to ensure consistency within the project.
VARGIS is leading a team of 20 mapping and technology companies to accomplish this project, including three primary sub-contractors: Air Survey Corp of Sterling, VA, EarthData International of Maryland, LLC, Gaithersburg, MD and BAE SYSTEMS ADR of Pennsauken, NJ.
