The Corporation of the District of Saanich has selected ESRI’s ArcGIS software as their enterprise GIS, and ESRI Canada to implement and support the GIS. The GIS is an integral part of Saanich’s overall integrated information technology plan. The Corporation of the District of Saanich is the largest member municipality of the Capital Regional District (CRD), with a population of approximately 106,000 (roughly 1/3 of the total population of the CRD). The District of Saanich has chosen to implement ESRI’s full suite of ArcGIS products including ArcInfo, ArcView, ArcSDE, and ArcIMS. These software products will be used for the implementation of the enterprise GIS. Saanich will use ArcSDE and Oracle for storage of enterprise GIS data, along with a number of ArcGIS seats for the display, query, and maintenance of GIS data. A core group of GIS users will receive Certified ESRI Technology Training to support the enterprise GIS implementation. In 2001, the CRD, which comprises 13 municipalities in the greater Victoria area, selected ESRI software for their enterprise GIS. The CRD’s selection process included a thorough investigation of available technology and provided the option for other member municipalities to participate in the terms and conditions of the agreement. The District of Saanich’s decision to select ESRI technology will greatly enhance the ability of these governments to communicate and provide their organizations and citizens with timely and accurate geographic information.
