Thane (India) municipal body to use satellite to detect illegal construction

THANE, India: Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) plans on taking the help of satellite mapping using GIS to detect illegal constructions. The TMC will now develop a Rs 1.6 crore-project which will help monitor illegal constructions across the suburb.

Currently, there are 1,08,451 illegal structures in the suburb with a maximum of them at Diva. According to the civic body, there are just nine registered structures in the area. Following Diva, Railadevi, Majiwada and Mumbra are the areas that have the maximum number of illegal structures. Targeting these areas, the civic body started demolishing illegal structures last week, but they had to face the wrath of the residents.

To nip the issue in bud, the TMC has now decided to resort to satellite mapping to prevent the structures from coming up. It is also more convenient as no physical patrolling is needed.

“We have designed a new project to dwindle the activity of local residents. We will map the structures in the suburb by using GIS. We will assign this contract to an able contractor and ask them to give complete data regarding the illegal work which was there in the city,” BG Pawar, Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment), said.
