Space Imaging signed an agreement with LOXBIT Co. Ltd. on Aug. 29, 2002 for the formation of Space Imaging Southeast Asia. The operations as well as the receiving antenna and processing facility are located at GISTDA’s (Geo-informatics and Space Technology Development Agency) Lat Krabang Satellite Receiving Station in Bangkok, Thailand. In order to ensure an efficient operation and quality service to the customers in the region, Loxbit has contracted MappointAsia, a well-known regional mapping/remote sensing company, as the operator of the ground station. Owned and operated by Space Imaging, IKONOS is the world’s first high-resolution commercial imaging satellite.
Space Imaging Southeast Asia will hold an open house on Feb. 24 at its Bangkok facility. It is anticipated Thailand’s Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will attend the event. The Princess had received formal studies and paid study visits to various institutes of higher learning and agencies concerned with remote sensing in the country and abroad, including the Remote Sensing Division of the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT). Her Royal Highness has devoted her time and efforts in research activities to determine the accuracy and reliability of the use of satellite remote sensing in practical work.
The ability to directly task IKONOS and download imagery into the Bangkok facility gives Space Imaging Southeast Asia a high distribution and quality control capability in the region. The imagery and data is ideal for urban planning and zoning, infrastructure planning, airport and harbor management, insurance and risk management, disaster assessment, natural resource management and environmental monitoring, national security and many other geospatial applications. Space Imaging Southeast Asia will have exclusive sales and distribution rights of IKONOS satellite imagery in Thailand. Customers in other countries that fall within the 4,600 km diameter communications cone centred on Bangkok may also buy IKONOS imagery directly from Space Imaging Southeast Asia.
