TCS to Supply 3T Systems Equipment to US Army

tactical transportable troposcatter (3T) system US: TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) has been awarded a contract to deliver tactical transportable troposcatter (3T) system equipment and sustainment to the US Army. Valued at USD 5.3 million, the contract is funded by the Army Project Manager for the Warfighter Information Network – Tactical (PM WIN-T) Commercial Satellite Terminal programme, under the global tactical-advanced communication systems and services (GTACS) contract vehicle. It has a maximum potential value of nearly USD 10 million, including funded and unfunded amounts, and runs until February 2016.

Classified as AN/TSC-198 (V3), the 3T system provides high bandwidth, low latency, non-satellite beyond-line-of-sight network transport for existing and future bandwidth intensive command, control, communications, computers, combat systems, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C5ISR) platforms. "TCS, in partnership with Comtech Systems, has created a growing market within the Department of Defense (DoD) for deployable troposcatter communication. TCS' 3T system provides the DoD with low latency, high bandwidth beyond-line-of-sight communications between multiple air-defence systems,” said Michael Bristol, TCS Government Solutions Group President.

"With our new 50 mbs modem, and its new advanced designs, we are now able to offer customers far more throughput than any previously fielded systems. Additionally, the solution is the only solution that is interoperable with legacy TRC-170 systems,” said Richard Burt, Comtech Systems President. The 3T system combines TCS' SNAP very-small-aperture terminal (VSAT) system with Comtech's IP-capable Troposcatter Terminal, which offers significant advances in troposcatter technology with a considerably smaller form factor than traditional systems. The system establishes connectivity at data rates greater than typical satellite links, without the recurring satellite airtime costs, providing greater speed for bandwidth-intensive applications, such as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) video distribution. TCS hopes to attract major interest from the DoD over the next three years as it looks to replace legacy TRC-170 systems through the GTACS programme of record.
