Tasmania develops 3D maps for miners

Australia: Tasmanian Government, Australia has created an interactive VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language) model of the State. It allows users to view multiple layers of data, turn these layers on and off at will, as well as manipulate the model by rotating, zooming and panning across any desired area of the Tasmania.
The VRML model is a 3D interactive map of the state. At present, the interactive 3D map is available for Western Australia’s Bremer Sub-basin, Paterson and Leonora-Laverton region as well as South Australia’s Gawler Craton: Olympic copper gold province.
In conversation with Australian Mining, Mineral Resources Tasmania’s manager of geoscience information, Bob Richardson, said that the government  went with the development of a 3D model of its entire jurisdiction – known as the TASGO model – as it would allow explorers to see areas, that from the surface, normally wouldn’t warrant further investment and exploration.
The model contains interpretations of the seismic reflection data and reflection and refraction paths from a number of surveys, as well as elevation, bathymetry, satellite imagery, geology maps, geophysical images, major geological structures, mineral deposits, geochronology sites and cross-sections and fault planes.
Richardson explained that they made a geological cross section every ten kilometres from east to west, and then did an occasional north to south cross section to tie it in. After all the information was gathered it was then compiled by Fractal Technologies (which is now FracSIS and subsidiary of Runge). This was first done in 2003 and since then we have been adding more and more detailed data.
In 2006, the 3D model for North East Tasmania was upgraded and remapped on a 1:25 000 scale. “This new mapping showed faults and breakdowns much better than before,” Richardson added. He said that currently, the focus is on rebuilding the 3D interactive model in GOCAD, as well as “adding new types of information to get a greater control of geological interpretation data.”
Richardson informed that the State’s minister for energy and resources, Bryan Green, recently outlined the sheer scale of the project, which is the world’s first 3D geological model of an entire jurisdiction; and its ability to promote Tasmania’s potential.
