Tanzania: The Tanzanian Ministry of Energy and Minerals has launched a project to upgrade its Mining Cadastre Information Management System (MCIMS) to support online transactions. The initiative has been funded by World Bank’s International Development Association and seeks to offer an integrated geo-portal for all stakeholders to interact with the Ministry through modern web-based technologies.
The upgrade initiative anchored by an IT company, Spatial Dimension, will also allow users to apply for mining rights and retain their current mining rights, submit production returns and reports and make online payments including mobile fund transfers such as M-Pesa.
Spatial Dimension CEO Bill Feast says “the transactional online mining cadastre portal, with real-time access to geodata, will greatly improve investor confidence and interest in the mining sector in Tanzania, while also aligning itself with another ambitious World Bank initiative – the Billion Dollar Map Project for Africa.
