Chennai, India, 26 July 2006: The Survey of India, Tamil Nadu branch, is introducing digital guide maps of Chennai in the form of CDs. The digital maps score over the paper variety in including some of the data `so far’ restricted to the public. Only those vital installations or spots, identified by Defence Ministry, will be barred from the digital maps.
Moreover, they can be updated, Stalin, Deputy Director, Survey of India, Tamil Nadu branch, said. The department planned to bring out the guide maps in the 1: 5,000 units scale in the digital format. Another feature is that more layers such as population and hydrology could be included.
He added the digital maps would be on sale by August-end or September. However, the price was yet to decided. Public may have to get Defence Ministry clearance for which they will be guided by the department. The details of the digital maps can be obtained at Geo-Spatial Data Centre, Survey of India at Thiru Vi Ka Industrial Estate, Guindy.
