Durban, South Africa, 28 May 2006: A two-day disaster management summit held in Durban has resolved that a well-focused disaster management plan spread across KwaZulu-Natal’s local and district councils should be devised to deal with any kind of disaster that might occur in the province in future.

Convened by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Local Government, the summit received inputs from local and international disaster management experts, including those who handled the devastating Hurricane Katrina and Tsunami disasters.

The provincial government was tasked to develop GIS capability for the use of municipalities and other role players. Key to effective disaster management, it was resolved that regular risk assessments be carried out and that response resources be placed in the most optimum positions to respond to these risks.
