Hyderabad, February 10, 2015: On the first day of the India Geospatial Forum, the India Geospatial Awards was organised to recognise and encourage innovations and excellence brought forward by geospatial technology developers, professionals, end users and policy makers that have fostered the geospatial industry in India.
This years’ Leadership Award in the category of Capacity Development was awarded to St Xavier’s College.
The St. Xavier’s College – Mumbai established in 1869, is today among India’s foremost educational establishments. Having recognised the values of the mapping and spatial sciences in nation-building, they incorporated courses on photogrammetry, mapping and photo-geology within their curricula almost half a century ago. These were followed by courses in remote sensing, digital image processing and, GIS at the graduate and postgraduate level in later years. The College has garnered dedicated professionals with a diverse range of expertise that has also resulted in the successful implementation of their educational programs and thence in creation of trained domain specialists.
Over the decades, the Department of Geology and other allied departments of the College have produced thousands of competent and qualified professionals who serve Indian and global geospatial industry and government programs. St. Xavier’s College has also been instrumental in developing entrepreneurs who chose to set up their own business ventures,thereby contributing substantially to the capacity building efforts in the geospatial domain.
