Sri Lanka: The Centre for Research and Development, which is under the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, has been working on developing a Geographic Information System (GIS) for tracking trains and mobile element, claims a report published by The Sunday Leader.

“The Railway department has developed a train tracking system which was demonstrated prior to CHOGM very successfully and put to good use during the Commonwealth summit by tracking the train in which Prince Charles travelled to Kandy and back. This system was later identified as a suitable system for the Railway Department to track trains under the instructions of the Secretary Defence and two prototypes were handed over to the Railway Department,” the report quoted Media Director of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya.

The collision of two trains that occurred in Pothuhera on April 30 has highlighted the need for an efficient GIS system which will keep track of trains and prevent similar accidents from taking place.
