SPOT 5 ready to launch

The fifth satellite in the SPOT series, SPOT 5, is scheduled for launch by an Ariane-4 rocket from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana on 4 May 2002.

On separation from the launcher the satellite will switch to operational mode. The in-flight commissioning phase will begin as soon as all orbital parameters are nominal.

Once operational SPOT 5 will replace the SPOT 1 satellite, which was launched in 1986. The SPOT series will then consist of SPOT 2, SPOT 4 and SPOT 5.

SPOT 5 offers increasingly precise new instruments, a higher revisit frequency and data resolution up to four times finer than with SPOT 1 to 4; 10 metres in colour compared to 20 metres and up to 2.5 metres in black and white compared to 10 metres.
