THE Central Informatics Organisation (CIO) has won a global award for special achievements in Geographic Information System (GIS).
CIO, represented by the Addresses and GIS Directorate, has received the award from US-based ESRI. CIO was selected from among 150,000 programme subscribers from around the world.
The award reflects the quality and accuracy of Bahrain’s GIS information system, said CIO president Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatalla Al Khalifa. GIS has developed several layers like buildings, roads, addresses, satellite images, points-of-interest, and landmarks over the past two years, he told a Press conference at the CIO headquarters in Isa Town.
It is also used in www.bahrainlocator.gov.bh which is an address location service recently published for the public. CIO has made very promising plans for the development of GIS in the kingdom where the Addresses and GIS Directorate is executing a programme and a strategic plan to place Bahrain alongside the developed countries in the field of GIS, said Shaikh Ahmed.
