Italy: Italian company, Selex ES has signed two contracts worth USD82.8 million to supply software-defined radio sets and night vision goggles to the Italian Army’s digitization programme, known as Soldato Futuro. The first contract covers the supply of 2,726 handheld software-defined radios, while the second contract covers the supply of the same number of night vision goggles, which can display data, including maps, on the eyepiece. The goggles also feature an integrated camera that can provide a command-and-control post with relayed images.
The Soldato Futuro programme has come under fire this month from Italian parliamentarians, who claim in a new report that the programme is too expensive and incompatible with other European army technologies.
