Brazil: Preliminary data released by Brazil”s space agency suggests a rapid increase in Amazon deforestation. Last year, Amazon deforestation was shown to be at a record low.
Brazil”s space agency monitors rainforest by using monthly satellite imagery. The data released on Tuesday suggests Amazon deforestation increased by more than a third in the last one year. The agency has detected almost 2,766 square kilometers of deforestation from August 2012 through July 2013. This is 35% higher than the area cleared in the previous year.
