India: The latest report of Forest Survey of India shows that India's forest cover has increased by 3,775 square km since 2013. This brings the total forest cover to 701,673 sq km, or 70.17 million hectares, which is equivalent to 21.34% of the country's geographical area. The states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Jammu & Kashmir and Karnataka have shown major gains in forest cover. The assessment of forest cover is done using latest remote sensing satellite data. Every feature in a satellite image is geo-coded. The interpretation work is done using Survey of India’s topographical sheets as the basis of extent.
