Remote sensing to be integrated into FSC Certification

Germany: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is launching a new project, funded by the European Space Agency (ESA), to assess the value of satellite remote sensing technologies in the FSC certification process. The project, which will start in May, aims at catalysing and giving direct support to the adoption of standardised, stable and reliable remote sensing services as a management and monitoring tool to support FSC goals and objectives.

Creating a portfolio of operational trials, the project aims to demonstrate the potential reduction of costs in generating the data required for certification and potentially to reduce certification barriers for small forest owners

The project will also develop an open source GIS based Forest Management Toolkit, which will increase satellite data utility and transparency in forest certification as well as enable local capacity building and technology transfer.
