Real-time mapping of North America’s ducks

U.S. based Ducks Unlimited and Waterfowler.com have joined forces to heighten hunter awareness and provide real-time mapping of the North American Waterfowl Migration during the 2004-05 general waterfowl-hunting season. In 1997, Waterfowler.com launched the Internet’s first real-time, interactive migration tracking and hunter report system with the goal to become one of the world’s most comprehensive, waterfowl resource. Ducks Unlimited is one of the world’s largest and most effective wetland conservation organizations.

The real-time mapping of North America’s ducks and geese has been accomplished with Waterfowler.com’s interactive GIS migration mapping system. Over 100,000 active participants provide zip code-based field reports that capture the interest of web-browsing waterfowl hunters. The hunter’s estimates of flight activity in an area measure migration intensity. The information submitted by users is averaged and updated every 15 minutes and reset to zero every 24 hours. The information is displayed in a simple color-coded format.
