Philippines: Disaster-hit towns and cities in the Negros Oriental province of the Philippines have been identified as recipients of a training programme on the establishment of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

The cities in this province are the first among more than 600 cities and municipalities all over the country that are situated in 18 major river basins that have been identified for the training programme. The programme will enable the staff to plot which areas are prone to disasters, such as land slides, floods, and to determine other risk areas. This programme will include the collection of information about disasters as well as history of events so the community can prepare and focus on preventions and drills in those areas.
