‘Philippine city is prone to floods and landslide’

Manila, Philippines: The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) office in Region 8, Philippines, completed geohazard mapping of Catbalogan City. According to MGB geologist James Leones, the city is prone to flood and landslides. Leones informed city officials about the situation and urged them to relocate residents staying in or near danger areas. He also said that forest degradation has been observed in upland barangays even as the city’s drainage and garbage disposal system needs to be improved.

The geohazard mapping of Catbalogan City is in line with the mapping of entire country at 1:10,000 scale by 2013. In this scale, the more detailed assessments, the better establishment of critical and susceptible areas will be identified.
