Pakistani court orders tightening of Patwari system

Lahore, Pakistan: The chief justice of the Lahore High Court in Pakistan ordered the Punjab government to constitute special task forces at district level to keep an eye on corrupt practices of Patwaris and to entertain public complaints against them, The Dawn, a Pakistani daily, reported.

Patwari is a term used in Pakistan and India for a land record officer at sub-division or Tehsil level. According to the report, the chief justice’s suggestion to the Punjab government is meaningless unless the present system of land record is computerised. GIS and GPS technology can also be quite effective in bringing transparency in the land information system.
