Orolia, through its Spectracom brand, announced the introduction of a Passive GPS/GNSS Anti-Jam Outdoor Antenna with horizon blocking technology. The antenna, Model 8230AJ, is a drop-in replacement for the company’s popular Model 8230 and is ideal for high interference situations where additional resilience is needed. Its unique conical antenna pattern rejects interference from the horizon and is simple to mount using the same pipe supports, without new cabling. All that is required is a new bracket.
“Model 8230AJ is a high gain (40 dB) GNSS outdoor antenna covering GPS L1, GLONASS L1, BeiDou B1, Galileo E1, and QZSS L1. It uses a three-stage low noise amplifier, a mid-section SAW, and a tight pre-filter to protect against saturation by high-level sub-harmonics and L-band signals,” said David Sohn, product manager. “It is designed especially for harsh environments, is IP67 rated, and is the ideal antenna to improve resilience and protect against jamming and spoofing.”
With the prevalence of jamming and spoofing, the antenna’s introduction is especially timely. Industries with critical infrastructure simply cannot afford the risk of interference. Although GPS and GNSS, in general, are the most established and primary positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) reference sources, they have well-known vulnerabilities and limitations that require protection and mitigation:
- GPS and GNSS signals are easily disrupted by unintentional interference from radio transmitters
- GPS and GNSS signals are extremely weak, cannot penetrate buildings and can easily be jammed
- Civilian GPS and GNSS signals are not encrypted and can easily be spoofed
- The need for PNT solutions with integrity and trust extends to commercial applications as well, to support critical homeland security and homeland infrastructure systems such as communications networks, financial systems, and power grids.
Sohn says the affordable new Anti-Jam Outdoor Antenna is appropriate for anyone who uses a time server, including Spectracom customers who own a SecureSync, VersaSync or Netclock.
