OGCs DTRIP kicks off with overwhelming response by Indian Geospatial Industry

New Delhi, India, 10 November 2008 – The first ever Interoperability pilot of OGC out side North America and Europe was kicked-off on Friday, 7th November at the Indian International Centre Annex located in New Delhi, India. Around 25 delegates from the Geospatial Industry along with the government and research institutes joined hands to come together on one platform, in achieving the main aim of the project in achieving an interoperable Multi-Modal transit scenario along with other added benefits.

Dr. Siva Kumar, CEO, National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) – India inaugurating the event said that NSDI is fully committed to this OGC initiative. Dr. M. P. Narayanan, Chairman, GIS Development brought before the dignitaries the forth coming Common Wealth Games event in 2010 and said, such kind of initiatives will see a definitive need and it is the right time that every one in have come together to benefit that cause.

Dr. Raj Singh, Director – Interoperability Programs from OGC represented his organisation which has played a key role in the successful launch of this pilot. He detailed the participants of this pilot about the OGC Standards and Processes their need and benefits being realised worldwide. He along with Sumit Sen, Head – Research & Training, GIS Development provided an overview of the project along with the responses so far. Deliberations about further schedule of events and work-packages under the D-TRIP were made.

The response from the industry and government came very strongly in a short period of time since, OGC has issued the Call for Call for Sponsorship and Participation (CFS/P) on 9th September 2008.

The participation in this project is expected to involve the following scenarios and related results:

  • Participants in this project will collaborate in developing of scenarios to guide testing, demonstrations and operations of the identified interoperable services.
  • Participants will provide services relevant to transportation and routing activities for the government partners involved in this pilot; where those services are deployed consistent with the OGC architecture based on Interoperability Arrangements.
  • Participates will thus also contribute to the refinement of the architecture and interoperability arrangements
  • The government agencies participating in the event agreed upon making the data from their organisations available for the purpose of the project. This was further enabled under the aegis of intellectual properties right agreements combined with the added aspects of digital rights management, which are being considered for this pilot. While the other stake holders agreed upon verbally on the provision of resources for this project, work is final stages to bring their consent.

    The project aims to bring together multiple data sources such as Satellite imagery, Topological and road network maps along with transit routes and real time data such as GPS feeds and other sensor data for the purpose of routing with in the Delhi NCR. Interoperability is a key to this process.

    The Geospatial Industry from Indian has been supporting this pilot since the plans to undertake an OGC lead initiative was declared in India.
    The companies that involved in the pilot include: Autodesk, Bentley, ERDAS, ESRI India, Infotech, Microsoft, Navyuga Engineering, Oracle, PCI Geomatics, Rolta, Speck Systems and TCS. This initiative has seen active participation from stakeholder organisations and research bodies namely Bonn- University-Germany, DMRC, DTC, DIMTS, Delhi Geospatial Company, SOI, NRSC, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, NISTAD and JNU.

    The event concluded with the briefings to the participants on their roles and responsibilities related to the Work Packages and work towards the successful completion of the pilot.

    During February, 2009 a mid term review will be held on the Data integration part which is one phase of the pilot. This project is expected to be completed by April, 2009 where final demonstration will be giving to the government stake holders brining out the various case studies.
    This will be preceded by a work group meeting where the systems integrations part the second and important phase of the pilot will be tested. Both the stake holders and industry are positive for the successful completion of the project with in the scheduled time.
