OGC supports Taiwan’s Open GeoSMS standard

Taiwan: The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), a national research organisation of Taiwan, got support from the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) to promote Open GeoSMS. It is an open-coordinate short message service standard to allow transmission of coordinates and geographic information among different formats and operating systems.

Open GeoSMS was developed by the ITRI’s Information and Communications Research Laboratories. OGC has set up an Open GeoSMS working group and is expected to approve the standard by the end of 2011, according to ITRI.

In line with internationalisation of Open GeoSMS, ITRI has donated software based on the standard to the Sahana Disaster Management System for use in disaster forewarning, reporting and relief, and has offered the standard for free licensed use by providers of LBS (location-based service) software around the world.

In addition, ITRI and 17 Taiwan-based enterprises, including Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, Far EasTone Telecommunications, Asustek Computer and Mitac International, have organised an LBS SIG (special interest group) to promote commercial applications for Open GeoSMS.
