ESRI Canada, in the interest of supporting and promoting open and accessible data sources, announced the immediate availability of GeoBase data as OGC-compliant data services. Several layers of GeoBase data are now available on the Geography Network Canada (geographynetwork.ca) as Web Map Services (WMS) and ArcIMS services. Through the Geography Network Canada portal, users have access to quality geospatial information at no cost and with unrestricted use.
GeoBase is a federal, provincial, and territorial government initiative that is overseen by the Canadian Council on Geomatics (CCOG). The goal of GeoBase is to provide the geospatial reference and context for a broad range of thematic data for government, business, and personal applications. By working together, multiple levels of government are increasing their efficiency in collecting and maintaining geospatial data. This also reduces duplication of efforts among agencies. CCOG firmly believes that pooling
capacities to establish a common reference is the best way to ensure Canadians have access to high-quality geospatial information covering Canada.
Interoperability and standards are important elements in ESRI’s overall software development and support efforts.
