India: India’s policy think tank NITI Aayog has announced a plan to create an established agenda for artificial intelligence (AI). It has circulated a note to provide INR 75 bn of funding for the creation of a cloud computing platform called AIRAWAT and research institutes.
A senior official told The Economic Times, “Selection of institutes and partners will be done based on guidelines that are being developed while the funding for all of this will be staggered based on the milestones achieved.”
According to the proposal, the whole AI project would be supervised by a special task force that would be headed by a member of NITI Aayog with representatives from ministries and experts and states.
NITI Aayog estimates AI could add $957 billion to the GDP of India by 2035, increasing annual growth by 1.3%. In 2018, NITI Aayog had released a nationwide agenda on AI.
Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog, has asked both central and state ministries in his letter to identify key areas where AI could be useful.
