Nexen, Inc., was presented with an Award of Excellence at ESRI Canada’s annual ESRI Regional User Conference in Calgary. Alex Miller, President of ESRI Canada, the GIS provider in Canada, presented the Award in recognition of Nexen’s efforts in developing and implementing a successful enterprise GIS. More than 200 GIS professionals were on hand for the presentation, which was one of the highlights of the conference. Nexen has been successfully using GIS in their exploration and production operations since 2000 and are recognizing tremendous gains in productivity and efficiency. Using ESRI’s ArcGIS suite of software including ArcView, ArcInfo, and ArcSDE, Nexen’s GIS team has built a mapping application that not only allows them to query and create maps from multiple data sources but also permits spatial data editing. They have integrated these spatial solutions with the corporate IT infrastructure and are now able to manage their datasets more efficiently. In addition, Nexen is leveraging the cartographic and analytical capabilities of the ArcGIS products to create higher quality maps than ever before and perform spatial analysis such as pipeline routing.
Nexen is a thriving oil, gas, and chemicals company with operations around the world. The company was formed in 1972 and originally known as Canadian Occidental Petroleum, Ltd. Nexen’s core business activities include exploration, development, production, and marketing of crude oil and natural gas; and manufacturing and marketing of sodium chlorate and chlor-alkali products (chlorine, caustic soda, and muriatic acid).
ESRI Canada presents Awards of Excellence annually to organizations or individuals across Canada for their outstanding achievement in the application of GIS technology.
