New information system aims to manage pollution crises in coastal Europe

Demonstrating how to help safeguard Europe’s many thousands of kilometres of coastline is a new system that brings together the vast range of data from weather and ocean monitoring stations across Europe, predicts likely outcomes so authorities can best respond to pollution crises. “We have an operational demonstrator right now,” says Dr Stein Sandven, DISMAR project coordinator and Research Director of the NERSC, Norway’s Environmental and Remote Sensing Center. DISMAR represents Data Integration System for Marine Pollution and Water Quality. The system already works and now user feedback is being gathered for the demonstrator evaluation. The project is expected to be finished in six months.

The overall objective of the IST-funded DISMAR project is to develop an advanced, intelligent information system to monitor and forecast the marine environment and thus improve management of pollution crises in coastal and ocean regions of Europe. The system will support public authorities and emergency services who are responsible for the prevention, mitigation and recovery in crises like oil spills and harmful algal blooms. This is important as the risks associated with ecological pollution are often underestimated. Harmful Algal Blooms can destroy an entire coastal ecology, robbing the water of vital oxygen, sun and nutrients, killing fish and disrupting the whole food chain, local tourism and the fishing industry. DISMAR will help tackle these issues.
