August 6, 2002 – The Centre for Topographic Information (CTI), part of the Earth Sciences Sector of Natural Resources Canada has initiated the production of CanMatrix, a raster data product derived from scanned 1:50,000 and 1:250,000 scale topographic maps of Canada.
The data files are available in GeoTIFF (.tiff) format. The scanned images are in colour, monochrome or photomap format and may be half sheets depending on the format of the original paper map sheet. CTI will create a national database composed of raster map data where each pixel is referenced to a known coordinate system (georeferenced). Furthermore, CanMatrix, being an image, can serve as a raster backdrop for various computer applications and with Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
CanMatrix will be available through CTI’s e-commerce Web site and to digital data subscribers. It is the first digital product of Northern Canada offering a topographic map image at a 1:50,000 scales. The objective is to produce a complete coverage of Northern Canada at both scales and then continue southward until all of Canada is covered.
For the Centre and the federal government, CanMatrix represents a continuing commitment to provide user-friendly geomatics products to the Canadian public.
