Australia: nearmap, a Sydney-based company that provides Web-based aerial imagery service, is planning to expand its operations outside Australia. The company is eyeing the North American and APAC markets.
nearmap provides Web-based and Web Mapping Service access to frequently updated, high resolution aerial imagery of most of Australia’s major cities and surrounding areas. It charters aircraft and uses a ”roll-on, roll-off” photography system developed by Stuart Nixon. The company”s business model is based around patented aerial photography and image processing technology. nearmap aims at 30,000-40,000 subscribers in Australia. The company has not released subscriber numbers but has given hints that they are planning to expand soon. “We”re starting to look at other markets. We just want to make sure we do it at the right time,” said managing director Simon Crowther. “You can”t be in the technology business and not think about trying to do business in the North American market. Equally, I think we have opportunities in Asia Pac that are appealing to us as well,” he added.
