Mumbai gets contour map to deal with floods

Mumbai, India: This monsoon, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai in India is all set to tackle the rainy season with contour map of the city. The civic body aims to use it to track flood-prone areas.

According to civic body, a composite multi-dimensional digitised map of Mumbai, also known as GIS, has been prepared. The impending need for a GIS for Mumbai was stressed upon by a fact-finding committee set up in the wake of the 26 /7 floods. The deluge raised concerns among planners about the virtual absence of data on Mumbai’s terrain.

“The whole project will finally be ready by 2012, but we can use the details of the map this monsoon,” said L S Vhatkar, Chief Engineer, storm water rains, BMC.
