Philippines: The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), Philippines, will expand geohazard mapping in several provinces in the country.
This action of MGB aims to pinpoint areas susceptible to landslides, floods and erosion. The target locations of the geohazard mapping are the towns of Itogon, Tublay, Mankayan and Atok in Benguet, Kiangan and Lagawe in Ifugao, Bontoc in Mt. Province, and Pilar in Abra.
MGB Regional Director Orlando Pineda said they have already provided local government units with land susceptibility maps, which may be used during calamities. According to Pineda, the Bureau chose the towns based on the number of residents, which may be affected by geohazards located in their towns.
Meanwhile, the bureau has also urged local government units to prepare evacuation plans and warning systems to mitigate the effects of heavy rains or flooding in the coming months.
